Duchess Catherine's Birthday Response (2016)

Today, I received a reply for the letter I wrote to Duchess Catherine for her Birthday in January! The reply was sent a little over a month after her birthday, which is a great response time.

If the card looks at all familiar it's because it is. This is the exact same picture and message used for Catherine's reply last year.

There is no way to tell them apart. I was comparing the two, and I mixed them up. I was luckily able to figure out which was which, because one of them had gotten slightly dented in the mail, and I could match the dent with the dented envelope, which of course has a postmark on the date and other distinguishing features (See Below).

The picture was taken by Arthur Edwards during the Cambridges visit to Only Connect's Head Office on 19th November 2013. Only Connect works with ex-offenders and young people at risk of offending to give the the skill, tools and opportunities to develop and pursue their life goals in a productive way.

This is quite a old photo (26 Months old), even old for last years reply (14 Months old). Of all the photos I've gotten from various royals, Catherine's Birthday replies (and Duchess of York) are the only ones I've gotten that have pictures over 6ish months old. Usually the photos are fairly recent.

The envelope looked just like the usual. But what was most interesting is it came in an envelope with William's monogram on the back. Catherine's mail usually comes in envelopes with her Golden Monogram. It was either a simple mistake, or they ran out of envelopes.

It would have been nice to see something new for her Birthday reply. I had been hoping for a picture of her becoming Honorary Air Commandant in December. I though that was a really important/ defining moment for her in the last year.(besides the birth of Princess Charlotte).

The Cambridges have a habit of sending out the same messages on their cards every year, although usually the picture is changed up, so you have something new. Or they will send out the same picture, but for different events, so the message is different.

A lot of Royals will vary their message slightly year from year.  This can be a little different wording or simply simply changing 30th Birthday to 31st Birthday.

Princess Charlene Birthday Reply

Replies from Monaco are always one of my favorites!

One of the things you have to appreciate is the fact that they use actual stamps. Prince Albert's father really loved stamps. He over saw the production of all of Monaco's stamps and opened the Museum of Stamps and Coins. (Monaco's two Princes before Albert's father were also big stamp collectors.)

This stamp features "La nymphe Salmacis", a work by Monaco sculptor François-Joseph Bosio (The nymph Salmacis - from greek mythology) The stamp was released in April, 2015.

A interesting thing about the envelope is the circle on the left side. All the letter I've gotten from Monaco have said "Service de S.A.S. le Prince/la Princesse de Monaco" (Service of HSH the Prince/ss of Monaco). But it is usually written in two lines. This is the first time I have seen it in a circle with the Monaco coat of arms.

Inside is a typed, thank you card for Princess Charlene's birthday, with a printed signature. Another thing I have always liked about Monaco's replies is that I had never gotten two that are exactly the same. Monaco replies come in all different sizes, formats, textures, paper, etc. So you never know what your going to get.

This reply was quite a surprise. Why? Because it is quite similar to last years.

But what is also very interesting is how the two birthday replies are different. They use a different type & color of paper, the font is different, the message is different. And most surprisingly the two monograms are different. In reality, it is the same crown above the interlocking "C"s, but since one is embossed, and the other is printed,  they look a little different.

Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary Christmas Note

Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary of Denmark are simple and predictable when it comes to sending replies. Their christmas reply this year is exactly like all of the other replies I have received from them. They even reused their message from last year's christmas reply.

The only real way to tell the difference between this reply and last years christmas reply is the date on the postmark, and the spacing of the message.

Queen Elizabeth & Prince Philip Christmas Thank You (2015)

Letters from the Queen are always extra special when they are sent from Sandringham!

I had written to The Queen and Prince Philip for Christmas, and as you may know they spend their holiday break at Sandringham. The envelope is exactly the same as the ones from Buckingham Palace, except for the postmark. The back of the envelope features the usual cypher (seen below on the letter).

The letter arrived yesterday, and took a little longer to arrive than normal, partly because I just moved and my mail is getting forwarded. A February reply for a christmas note is perfectly reasonable. The Queen's staff is obviously very busy before christmas, then on holiday and then taking a while to catch up on everything. I'm still waiting on a few more Christmas replies, which I hope/would expect by the end of the month.

Inside the envelope is a letter written by Mary Morrison, one of the Queen's Ladies in Waiting. Instead of the usual Buckingham Palace under the Queen's Cypher, it says Sandringham House where the letter was written.

From the reply it's quite clear that Mary Morrison read my letter. The letter mentions that I had written to both the Queen and Philip. (I have written to both of them before, but this is the 1st reply I have gotten that acknowledges that.) It also mentions my "kind words" in advance of the Queen's 90th this year, as well as me talking about the royal family as a whole, which are not things every letter written to the Queen for Christmas are going to mention.

I know the Queen is given a selection of letters and cards to read over her christmas break at Sandringham. Who knows if my letter was actually one of those. My letter may have just ended up at Sandringham because the Queen's Ladies-in-waiting wanted letters to reply to when they had a little down time.

People receive replies, for their Christmas letter, from both Sandringham and Buckingham Palace. In fact last year, there was some mix up in their office and I received two replies from my christmas letter. One from Sandringham and one from Buckingham.  I do how ever feel like this year's letter is more personal than in the past.

Queen Mathilde of Belgium Birthday Reply (2016)

The 2nd piece of Royal Mail that arrived today is from Belgium. I had written to Queen Mathilde for her 43rd Birthday last month.

The envelope looks similar to the other ones I have received from Belgium. Unfortunately the postmark has been placed over the royal cypher. Sometimes, the Belgium Post is nice enough to place it at the bottom of the letter, so it doesn't ruin the cypher.

While all the envelopes from Belgium have been similar, they have all been slightly different. What was most interesting is that the crowns have been different. It's understandable the crown on different royal's Monogram would be different, but I would expect "Palais de Bruxelles" to always use the same crown. And for the crown on the envelope to match the card inside.

Inside the envelope is a typed note. And you will notice the crown here, does not match the one on the envelope. The message is in French, the 2nd of three official languages in Belgium.

The Message reads: "Her Majesty The Queen would like to thank you very much for the nice congratulations you offered her on the occasion of her birthday on 20 January."

Included with the card is a picture of Queen Mathilde, taken by Christian Lambiotte.

The reply came just a few weeks after her birthday, which is a great response time.

Grand Duke Jean 95th Birthday Thank You

    Happy Valentines Day Weekend!!

I was very exciting when I saw this in the mail box today. Not just because it's royal mail, which is always exciting, but because this was the 1st time I had written to the Luxembourg royals. I really didn't know what to expect in response.

I had written to Grand Duke Jean for his 95th Birthday last month.

The front of the envelope is pretty standard looking. And yes that is Grand Duke Henri (Jean's son) on the 2nd stamp.

The back of the envelope features a crown and where the letter was from, Chateau de Fischbach (Fischbach Castle). Fischbach Castle is the residence of Grand Duke Jean.

Inside the envelope is a typed thank you card. This is quite similar to the type of responses usually send by the King and Queen of Belgium and the Crown Prince and Crown Princess of Denmark.

The response came with a pretty good response time. The reply was sent almost exactly a month after the Grand Duke's Birthday.
