Spain holds it National Day (Fiesta Nacional de España) each year on October 12 and commemorates the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus in 1492. 

The celebration was made official in 1918 by King Alfonso XIII and originally honored Spain's global influence. The holiday was originally called Día de la Hispanidad (Spanishness Day).

The current National Day of Spain was put into law in 1987 (Law 18/1987, of October 7).

    • Military parade at Plaza de Cánovas del Castillo with tribute to the flag
