Passing of Princess Brigitte of Sweden

Princess Brigitte of Sweden passed away today at age 87. She passed away in Spain, on the island of Mallorca where she lived.

Princess Birgitta Ingeborg Alice was the older sister of King Carl Gustaf. She was married to Prince Johann Georg of Hohenzollern (1932–2016) and had three children and a number of grandchildren.

Flag will be flown at half-mast at Drottningholm Palace and Haga Palace on Thursday 5 December.

“With great sadness, I have today received the news that my sister, Princess Birgitta, has passed away. My sister was a colorful and forthright person who will be deeply missed by me and my family. Together with all my family, I send my condolences to Princess Birgitta's children and grandchildren.”

Funeral & burial
  • Sunday Dec 15th 
    • Funeral at Drottingholm Palace Chapel attended by family, friends and special guests. 
    • Burial at the Royal Cemetery at Hagaparken.
    • Seraphim ring at Riddarholm Church (Noon-1 PM)
    • Book of condolence at Stockholm Castle 10AM to 1 PM, and Riddarholm church Noon- 1 PM on the day of the funeral.
  • Monday Dec 16th
    • The Royal Cemetery at Hagaparken will be open from 11 AM to 2 PM for those who wish to visit Princess Birgitta's grave.

Denmark Advent/Christmas Calendar (2024)

In past years, the Denmark Palace has released a Christmas Calendar on social media, with posts each day from December 1st to December 24th. 

During December's four Advent Sundays, King Frederik and Queen Mary will examines a number of Danish Christmas traditions. "With visits around Denmark, the Majesties, together with a number of experts, are helping to find the common thread from the Vikings' pre-Christian Christmas to the holiday we know and celebrate today."

Each Day's Topic
  • December 1st (1st Sunday of Advent) - King Frederik visits the Viking Ship Museum to learn about viking traditions.
  • December 8th  (2nd Sunday of Advent) - Queen Mary visits Grundtvig's Church in Bispebjerg to meet with Confirmation Students
  • December 15th (3rd Sunday of Advent) - Queen Mary visits Funen Village in Odense to learn about Christmas in the countryside in the old days. 
  • December 22nd (4th Sunday of Advent) -  King Frederik visits Den Gamle By, an historical village/open air museum to learn about Danish Christmas Trees traditions.
