King Albert of Belgium - Hospitalizations & Serious Health Issues

I think anytime a royal is in the hospital or having a major health event, there is public concern. I have compiled this information for the purpose of allowing the public to better understand the royal's health history.

All information I share is publicly available information that has been released by the palace. Out of respect for the royals, I don't include any rumors or anything not confirmed by the palace or royals. 

2024
  • May
    • Fell ill and required medical attention while at vacation home in France
      • Albert was treated “at home”.
      • Advised not to travel by doctors until the end of the month. So, he is unable travel back to Belgium. 
      • Updates:
        • Thursday May 16th
          • Dutch newspaper Het Nieuwsblad reveals King Albert fell ill earlier this week and required medical attention. 
          • Palace confirmed the news, but stated Albert is doing well now. And that the health issue was not serious. 
          • 90th Birthday celebrations in Early June remain unchanged. 
2023
  • June/July
    • Hospitalized at Cliniques Universitaires Saint-Luc Hospital (June 27th -July 5th) 
      • For Dehydration 
      • Updates:
        • Tuesday June 27th 
          • Albert is doing well, expected to be released in a few days. 
        • Thursday June 29th 
          • Albert is doing well. He needs rest and is expected to stay in the hospital until early next week.
        • Monday July 3rd
          • Albert is doing well, but needs time to rest and recover. His doctors have decided not to take any risks and he will stay in the hospital for a few more days. 
        • Wednesday July 5th
          • Released from the Hospital. In addition to dehydration, doctors diagnosed him with a blood infection which he is also being treated for. 
2018
  • April 
    • Hospitalized at Cliniques Universitaires Saint-Luc Hospital (April 18th-20th)
      • To run tests to determine the best treatment for a narrowing of a heart valve
      • Coronary Angioplasty Surgery (Insert Stent to open clogged heart arteries) (April 19th) 
    • Hospitalized at Cliniques Universitaires Saint-Luc Hospital (?-May 2nd)
      • Surgery to replace Aortic Valve (April 30th)
2013
  • July
    • Abdicated due to “health reasons”
2011
  • November
    • Surgery at Cliniques Universitaires Saint-Luc Hospital 
      • To remove Basal cell carcinoma on his nose
2007
  • Summer
    • Hip Replacement Surgery
