Funeral of Grand Duke Jean of Luxembourg

Grand Duke Jean passed away on April 23rd at 12.25 AM at age 98. Grand Duke Jean became monarch in 1964 and reigned until 2000 when he abdicated in favor of his son, Grand Duke Henri.

Grand Duke Jean is survived by five children, twenty-two grandchildren & fifteen great-grandchildren.

  • 12:25 AM
    • Grand Duke Jean passed away 
  • 10 AM 
    • The government holds a minute of silence
  • 12:15 PM 
    • Church bells ring for 15 minutes
  • Flags lowered to half mass
  • National Period of morning begins
  • A wreath was placed on his stall at St George’s Chapel, at Windsor Castle. 
  • Grand Duke Jean's banner & coat of arms will be removed as well. The coat of arms will be returned to the College of Arms. & The banner will be kept till Memorial Evensong service.
    • (This is done for all the Knights of the Order of the Garter.)
April 28th 
  • 2:30-3:00 PM
    • The coffin of Grand Duke Jean will be transferred from Château de Berg to Grand Ducal Palace 
April 29th - May 3rd 
  • Grand Duke Jean's Coffin will Lie in State at the Grand Ducal Palace 
  • Books of condolence will be available for the public to sign at the guard posts at the Grand Ducal Palace, Château de Berg and Château de Fischbach.
May 4th
  • 11 AM 
    • Funeral at Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Luxembourg
    • More details to come

    • 6 PM
      • Period of National Mourning ends
    • 12 PM
      • Grand Duke Jean's Coat of arms is moved from the Stockholm Royal Palace to the Riddarholm Church and hung on the wall.
        • (This is done for all the Knights of the Order of the Seraphim on the day of their funeral.)
    • 6 weeks of Official Court Morning ends
    • Memorial Evensong service at St. George's Chapel at Windsor Castle. 
      • Jean's banner will be blessed by the Dean and returned to the Duke’s family

    Royal Attending Funeral 
    The funeral of his wife, Grand Duchess Joséphine Charlotte, in 2005, was attended by a large number of foreign royals, including one from each of the 10 current European monarchies. I would expect a similar turnout.
